- Skill:
- short hops, glove work, timing
- Equipment:
- Cones
- Duration:
- About 6 min
- Setting:
- Indoor
- Players:
- Partner
Coaching notes
An X is marked on the ground (tape or cones). Coach or partner bounces balls into the center of the X. Player starts from various angles, fields the short hop cleanly, and transitions to a throw.
Objectives
Improve short-hop timing and glove presentation; force players to get the ball out in front; build confidence on difficult hops.
Coaching cues
Attack the center of the X; glove out early and soft; eyes behind the glove; right-left into the throw.
Common errors
Waiting on the hop; stabbing; letting the ball get deep; rising before the catch.
Safety
Use soft or tennis balls initially for younger players; ensure clear space behind the X.
Setup
Tape or four cones forming an X; partner feeding from short distance.
Progressions
Stationary → moving into the X → one-handed only → full throw after every rep.
Variations
Start exclusively on the backhand; add a second ball for chaos; work from knees for pure hand work.
Steps
- 1. Mark an X on the ground.
- 2. Partner bounces the ball into the center of the X.
- 3. Player fields the short hop cleanly with soft hands out in front.
- 4. Transition feet and throw to a target.
