Simplest 1st & 3rd Play – Throw to Pitcher
Basic, high-percentage first-and-third defense in which the catcher throws directly to the pitcher who then tags the runner breaking home or holds the runner at third.

Coaching notes
Runner at first breaks on the pitch. Catcher throws a firm, accurate ball to the pitcher. Pitcher either tags the advancing runner from third or simply holds him while the middle infielders cover second. Ideal for youth and early high-school teams that need a reliable, low-risk play.
Objectives
Provide a simple, executable first-and-third solution; reduce chaos and errant throws; teach clear roles and communication.
Coaching cues
Catcher throws firm and accurate to the pitcher; pitcher catches and immediately turns to third; middle infielders cover second; communicate early.
Common errors
Soft or off-line throw to the pitcher; pitcher turning the wrong way; runners not held; lack of pre-pitch call.
