Plyo-Box Explode Fielding Reaction Drill
ZONED Sports Academy reaction drill in which the fielder drops from a plyo box and immediately explodes to a bounced ball, training first-step quickness and glove work under sudden load.
- Equipment:
- Ball only
- Duration:
- About 10 min
- Setting:
- Indoor or outdoor
- Players:
- Partner
Coaching notes
Athlete stands on a plyometric box. On the coach’s bounce of the ball the athlete drops off the box, lands athletically, and explodes to field the ground ball. The sudden drop forces the legs to load and the glove to get out quickly, improving reaction time and change-of-direction under game-like stress.
Objectives
Develop explosive first-step reaction, soft hands under sudden load, and the ability to field cleanly after an unexpected landing.
Coaching cues
Land soft and athletic; get the glove out early; stay low through the fielding window; explode through the ball rather than reaching.
Common errors
Landing stiff-legged; reaching with the glove instead of moving the feet; standing up after the field instead of staying in the athletic window.
Steps
- 1. Athlete stands on plyo box ready position
- 2. Coach bounces a ball as the athlete drops off the box
- 3. Land athletically and explode to field the ball
- 4. Complete the play with a throw or transfer
