Coaching notes

Demonstrates and practices the proper body orientation and footwork for a cutoff man: creating a lane with the legs, receiving the ball on the glove side with weight ready to throw, and avoiding the common jab-step mistake that kills momentum.

Objectives

Master glove-side cutoff receiving; create proper throwing lanes; transfer momentum efficiently into the relay throw.

Coaching cues

Create the lane with your legs; Catch glove side; Weight on the throwing-side foot; No jab step; Momentum through the throw.

Common errors

Jab-stepping at the ball; Catching across the body; Standing flat-footed; Losing the throwing lane.

Steps

  1. 1. Outfielder or coach throws to cutoff position
  2. 2. Cutoff man creates lane and receives glove side
  3. 3. Immediate transfer and throw to target
  4. 4. Vary throw location (high, short, off-line) to force adjustment
