Marty Schupak Youth Rundown and Overthrow Drill Series

Youth-friendly rundown practice that emphasizes zero- or one-throw outs plus an overthrow recovery station.

Duration:
About 8 min

Coaching notes

From Schupak Sports clinic: runners between bases, fielders practice charging, throwing, and peeling while learning to put the runner in sprint mode; also includes first-base overthrow recovery.

Objectives

Teach clean, low-throw rundowns and recovery from overthrows that commonly occur in youth games.

Coaching cues

Charge hard to force the sprint; peel to the right after the throw; ideal is zero throws, next-best is one; get the out rather than just running the runner back.

Common errors

Too many throws; jogging instead of sprinting at the runner; peeling the wrong direction.

Steps

  1. 1. Helmets on runners
  2. 2. Two groups (1-2 and 3-home)
  3. 3. On 'go' force the rundown
  4. 4. Score points for clean outs
  5. 5. Rotate and add overthrow station
