Infield Footwork Progression – Push-Step-One-Two

Progressive fielding series that starts stationary and adds push-through, minimal steps, and directional angles (standard, glove-side, backhand) for clean transfer into throwing position.

Equipment:
Cones
Duration:
About 10 min
Setting:
Indoor or outdoor
Players:
Partner

Coaching notes

Athlete works short hops and routine ground balls first with feet still, then adds a push step through the ball, then a one-two shuffle into throwing position. Covers multiple angles so the lower body stays under the upper body.

Objectives

Create efficient, minimal-step footwork after the catch; keep the body under control into the throw; handle varied infield angles with the same lower-body pattern.

Coaching cues

Push through the ball; stay low; minimal steps to the throwing position; keep the chest over the feet; one-two into the throw.

Common errors

Too many steps or hopping; rising up after the catch; crossing the feet; losing direction to the target.

Steps

  1. 1. Stationary short-hop and routine ground balls
  2. 2. Add push step through the ball
  3. 3. Add one-two shuffle into throwing position
  4. 4. Work standard, glove-side, and backhand angles
