Duration:
About 12 min
Setting:
Outdoor
Players:
Small group

Coaching notes

Championship Productions / Barry Davis (Rider University) rundown drill emphasizing aggressive pursuit, shortened throws, and immediate tags while rotating fielders so the entire infield stays active.

Objectives

Teach proper rundown geometry, communication, and aggressive chase so rundowns become outs instead of free bases.

Coaching cues

Get the runner going full speed back to the lead base; first baseman calls 'ball' and attacks; shortstop trails only partway to shorten the throw; release the ball quickly; never give the runner time to stop.

Common errors

Passive pursuit, long throws across the full 90 feet, multiple throws without a tag attempt, standing around between reps.

Steps

  1. 1. Set simultaneous rundowns on both sides of the diamond
  2. 2. Shortstop trails to a point in the baseline
  3. 3. Lead fielder calls 'ball', receives and attempts immediate tag
  4. 4. If runner retreats, trail man closes for shorter throw
  5. 5. Rotate groups after each set for continuous work
