Coaching notes

Players work the full routine of fielding a ground ball cleanly in front of the body, using right-left (or left-right) footwork to get into throwing position, and delivering an accurate throw while maintaining body control.

Objectives

Build automatic, repeatable field-to-throw mechanics; improve accuracy under control; reinforce staying low and athletic throughout the play.

Coaching cues

Field the ball out in front; right foot to left foot (or reverse); stay low through the transition; finish the throw with balance and follow-through.

Common errors

Fielding the ball under the body; stopping the feet; rising before the throw; rushing the release.

Safety

Start with soft grounders; ensure throwing partners are ready and protected.

Setup

Partner or coach rolling ground balls; can be done in a line or small groups.

Progressions

Knees-down for pure hands → full athletic stance → moving into the ball → game-speed with a throw to a base.

Variations

Add a second ball or a fake bobble recovery; work both forehand and backhand angles.

Steps

  1. 1. Receive a rolled ground ball while in athletic posture.
  2. 2. Field cleanly out in front of the body.
  3. 3. Execute proper footwork (right-left or left-right) into throwing position.
  4. 4. Deliver an accurate throw while staying balanced and low.
