Cross-Over Step Infield First-Step Drill

Isolated crossover-step repetitions to eliminate false first step and create direct, efficient movement to both glove and backhand sides.

Equipment:
Cones
Duration:
About 8 min
Setting:
Indoor or outdoor
Players:
Partner

Coaching notes

Player starts in athletic ready position. Coach or partner rolls balls to glove side and backhand side. Emphasis is exclusively on the first crossover step (outside foot crosses over) so the player moves directly to the ball without a false step or hop.

Objectives

Remove false first step, increase range, create efficient direct routes to ground balls.

Coaching cues

Outside foot crosses over first; no hop or false step; stay low and athletic; glove out early; drive through the ball.

Common errors

False first step, hopping, turning hips too early, standing up.

Steps

  1. 1. Athletic ready position
  2. 2. Roll to glove side; execute pure crossover step and field
  3. 3. Repeat to backhand side
  4. 4. Add throw after clean field; increase distance gradually
