Competitive Dual Rundown Drill

High-urgency rundown station that forces aggressive chase, one-throw execution, and communication under competitive pressure.

Skill:
rundowns
Equipment:
Glove
Duration:
About 10 min
Setting:
Outdoor
Players:
Team

Coaching notes

Two simultaneous rundowns (e.g., 1st–2nd and 3rd–home) run with live runners. Defenders must close the gap at full speed, use proper fakes, and finish with one throw or less while communicating.

Objectives

Eliminate passive rundowns and install the “go get the runner” mindset with clean communication.

Coaching cues

Charge full speed with ball up; one-arm fake; close the gap; receiver moves toward the runner as the throw is made.

Common errors

Throwing too early; soft chase; poor communication; multiple throws.

Setup

Full diamond or two baseline areas; multiple baseballs; clear roles.

Steps

  1. 1. Assign defenders and runners for two simultaneous rundowns
  2. 2. Start the rundowns on coach command
  3. 3. Defenders charge aggressively and finish in one throw or less
  4. 4. Rotate roles after each rep
  5. 5. Score clean outs for competitive edge
