Stay-Low Do-or-Die Outfield Ground-Ball Drill

Short, competitive drill that forces outfielders to stay low and under control while charging do-or-die ground balls, improving body position for the subsequent throw.

Equipment:
Glove
Duration:
About 6 min
Setting:
Outdoor
Players:
Partner

Coaching notes

Outfielder charges a rolled or lightly fungoed ground ball at full speed, fields it low, and immediately transitions into a crow-hop or power throw. Emphasis is on staying low through the fielding window so the throw is on balance.

Objectives

Eliminate rising up on do-or-die plays; improve fielding posture under speed; set up a strong, accurate throw after the charge.

Coaching cues

Stay low; get the glove out early but under control; field and immediately load for the throw; push out, not up.

Common errors

Rising up as the ball arrives; fielding too upright; slow transition into the throw; loss of momentum.

Steps

  1. 1. Coach rolls or lightly fungoes a ground ball
  2. 2. Outfielder charges at full speed while staying low
  3. 3. Fields cleanly and transitions immediately into crow-hop or power throw
  4. 4. Reset and repeat
