Teaches the pivot-crossover first step that gains extra ground to reach balls hit into the gaps or over the head.

Equipment:
Ball only
Duration:
About 8 min
Setting:
Outdoor
Players:
Partner

Coaching notes

Players practice the two-step pivot-crossover versus a standard step to demonstrate the extra 2-3 feet gained. Emphasize the move on balls hit to the left or right, especially glove-side, then apply it on live fly balls.

Objectives

Improve first-step efficiency and range on gap and over-the-head fly balls by mastering the pivot-crossover footwork.

Coaching cues

Pivot and cross over for balls to the side; gain the extra 2-3 feet that can be the difference between a catch and a double; keep the drill short and focused on the first two steps.

Common errors

Taking a false step forward first; incomplete pivot; not crossing the trail foot fully; standing upright instead of staying athletic.

Steps

  1. 1. Demonstrate standard two steps vs pivot-crossover
  2. 2. Player practices pivot-crossover to left and right without ball
  3. 3. Add tossed fly balls into the gaps
  4. 4. Emphasize gaining extra ground on the first two steps
