Outfield Y Drill for Over-the-Shoulder Catches
Cone Y-setup drill teaching outfielders to accelerate into gaps, maintain arm action while tracking over the shoulder, and stay ground-based on deep balls.
- Equipment:
- Cones
- Duration:
- About 10 min
- Setting:
- Outdoor
- Players:
- Partner
Coaching notes
Four cones form a Y. Athlete sprints from base of Y to the fork, then breaks left or right on coach throw for over-the-shoulder catch. Emphasizes continuous arm swing, knee drive, and resisting the urge to jump. Can be done resisted (bands) then free for feel of acceleration.
Objectives
Expand range on gap and over-shoulder balls; keep sprint mechanics intact while tracking; build hip strength and first-step explosiveness into deep routes.
Coaching cues
Pump arms all the way; stay on the ground—do not jump; drive knees; keep eyes and chest turning to the ball late; accelerate through the catch point.
Common errors
Freezing arm swing when tracking; jumping at the ball; early glove extension that slows the runner; rounded rather than straight-line routes.
Steps
- 1. Set four cones in Y shape (~15 yd arms for older, shorter for youth)
- 2. Athlete starts at base, sprints to fork
- 3. Coach throws over-shoulder to left or right branch
- 4. Athlete breaks, maintains arm action, catches on the run, stays low
- 5. 8–12 reps each side; finish with free (no band) sets
