Coaching notes
Catcher stands against a wall and receives short throws or self-tosses with only the glove hand, focusing on pocket catches and clean transfers to the throwing hand.
Objectives
Build trust in the glove hand and remove the habit of reaching with the bare hand.
Coaching cues
Catch in the pocket; bring to the ‘A’ position; transfer at midline; elbows out.
Common errors
Stabbing; catching in the web; bringing the ball to the shoulder instead of the transfer point.
Setup
Wall; baseballs; catcher’s mitt.
Steps
- 1. Stand near wall in receiving stance
- 2. Receive short tosses or self-tosses with glove hand only
- 3. Secure in pocket and bring to transfer position
- 4. Simulate transfer and throw
- 5. Increase distance and speed gradually
