JK Drill 2.0

Advanced variation of the JK Drill using a visual bat marker and half-turns to train early plane entry and upward acceleration through the middle of the ball under higher velocity.

Equipment:
Bat / tee
Duration:
About 8 min
Setting:
Indoor or outdoor
Players:
Solo

Coaching notes

Hitter starts in stride position. Holds bat at downward angle as visual marker (or uses rack). Performs slow then full-speed half turns attacking the knob upward, getting on plane early and accelerating through the middle of the ball. Progresses by removing the visual.

Objectives

Improve connection and swing plane for velocity pitches; reduce clipping the bottom of the ball; create room for timing error.

Coaching cues

Attack the plane of the bat and move the bat up; get behind the ball and on plane as long as possible; hit up through the middle of the ball; get on plane early; accelerate upward.

Common errors

Attacking the ball at contact instead of the plane; top-hand push; getting in front of the rack; clipping bottom half due to fear of missing.

Steps

  1. 1. Get to stride position like a normal tee swing
  2. 2. Hold bat at downward angle as visual marker
  3. 3. Slow half-turn: attack the knob and move bat up through middle
  4. 4. Progress to full-speed half-turns
  5. 5. Remove visual and repeat with ball/tee
