Diamond Outfield Line-Drive & Change-of-Direction Drill
Four-cone diamond that forces head turns, direction changes, and catching low line drives on the run—simulating misreads and recovery routes.
- Equipment:
- Cones
- Duration:
- About 10 min
- Setting:
- Outdoor
- Players:
- Partner
Coaching notes
Cones form a diamond. Athlete works sequential over-the-shoulder catches while changing direction mid-route, including a final low line-drive recovery. Trains efficient angles and recovery when the initial read is wrong.
Objectives
Improve change-of-direction on misread fly balls; catch line drives on the run; keep routes efficient even after a head turn or direction flip.
Coaching cues
Stay true to the line; turn the head, not the whole body; catch on the run; put the ball down and explode to the next angle.
Common errors
Rounding routes; slowing to catch; poor head-turn timing; failing to accelerate after the direction change.
Steps
- 1. Set four cones in a large diamond
- 2. Athlete works sequential over-shoulder catches with direction changes
- 3. Finish with a low line-drive recovery into the middle
- 4. Reset and work opposite direction
