Coaching notes
Catcher starts in sign stance, then on verbal call moves into primary, single-knee, or secondary receiving stance, holds the low target, and returns to signs. Performed as a short daily circuit.
Objectives
Automate clean stance transitions, improve target presentation, and build consistency for every pitch type.
Coaching cues
Shoulders forward; low target; hips behind; left foot back; heels up; arm up for single knee.
Common errors
High target; upright posture; delayed transition; feet not set under the body.
Setup
No equipment beyond catcher’s gear; can be done alone or with a partner calling pitches.
Steps
- 1. Start in sign stance
- 2. On ‘fastball’ call transition to primary stance with low target
- 3. Return to sign stance
- 4. Transition to single-knee (left knee down, hips back, low target)
- 5. Return then transition to secondary stance
- 6. Repeat the full series
