- Skill:
- athleticism and throwing
- Equipment:
- Glove
- Duration:
- About 8 min
- Setting:
- Outdoor
- Players:
- Partner
Coaching notes
Coach gives directional commands; catcher scrambles like a QB, performs athletic shuffles, squares shoulders, and delivers a strong accurate throw to a target. Simulates recovery from blocks, bunts, and steal attempts.
Objectives
Develop explosive footwork and body control under pressure; improve throw accuracy after movement; build athletic base for blocking, bunts, and passed balls.
Coaching cues
Explosive controlled shuffles not full run; square shoulders to target before throw; elbow above shoulder; finish down and through for backspin; vision locked on target; stay athletic.
Common errors
Running instead of shuffling; throwing before square; high finish without down-and-through; losing vision on target.
Safety
Start with light throws; clear throwing lane.
Setup
Open space, target (circle or partner), glove, baseballs. Coach calls directions.
Progressions
Stationary scap load → scramble + throw → add fatigue or multiple commands.
Variations
Vary scramble distance; add block recovery start; left/right mix.
Steps
- 1. Stationary scap-load warm-up feel
- 2. Coach commands scramble left or right
- 3. Back up then 2-3 athletic shuffles
- 4. Square shoulders and throw to target on the run
- 5. Reset and reverse directions
