Big League Prep Outfield Reverse-Pivot Drill
The Baseball Pro short but specific drill teaching the reverse-pivot footwork used by big-league outfielders when the ball is hit slightly behind or to the side.
- Equipment:
- Ball only
- Duration:
- About 6 min
- Setting:
- Outdoor
- Players:
- Partner
Coaching notes
Outfielder practices the reverse-pivot (drop-step and open) so the body stays under the ball and the throwing side is already in position for a strong throw after the catch. Emphasizes quick feet and immediate transition into the crow-hop or power throw.
Objectives
Master the reverse-pivot so outfielders never get caught flat-footed on balls hit slightly behind them.
Coaching cues
Drop-step and open the hips immediately; keep the eyes on the ball; land in a strong throwing position; transition straight into the crow-hop.
Common errors
Crossing the feet instead of opening; watching the ball too long before moving the feet; stopping after the catch instead of flowing into the throw.
Steps
- 1. Start in ready position
- 2. On the ball slightly behind, execute a clean reverse-pivot (drop-step + open)
- 3. Catch under control and immediately transition into the throw
- 4. Repeat from both sides
