Big League Prep Outfield Fence Drill
The Baseball Pro fence drill that teaches outfielders how to play the wall, time their jump, and make the catch without crashing into the fence.
- Equipment:
- Ball only
- Duration:
- About 10 min
- Setting:
- Outdoor
- Players:
- Partner
Coaching notes
Outfielder works balls hit toward the fence, learning to locate the wall early, time the approach, and jump or reach without losing body control. Emphasis on communication with the wall and the ability to still make a strong throw after the catch.
Objectives
Eliminate fear of the fence, improve wall timing, and keep the body under control so a strong throw is still possible after the play.
Coaching cues
Locate the fence early; time the jump or reach; keep the eyes on the ball; land balanced and ready to throw.
Common errors
Running full speed into the fence without locating it; jumping too early or too late; turning the back completely to the infield after the catch.
Steps
- 1. Outfielder starts at a distance that allows a full approach to the fence
- 2. Coach hits balls toward the wall at varying heights and angles
- 3. Locate the fence early, time the jump or reach, and secure the catch
- 4. Land balanced and make a strong throw back to the infield
