Antonelli Middle-of-the-Field BP Focus Drill

Antonelli Baseball batting-practice approach drill that trains hitters to drive the ball gap-to-gap with backspin instead of pulling everything early.

Duration:
About 12 min

Coaching notes

In BP or soft toss the hitter deliberately aims for the middle of the field (left-center to right-center). Emphasis on watching the spin of the batted ball for pure backspin.

Objectives

Eliminate early pull-side bias; train gap-to-gap approach; improve barrel awareness through spin feedback.

Coaching cues

Aim middle of the field; watch the spin for pure backspin; stay deeper in the zone so you can adjust to slower pitches.

Common errors

Pulling everything early; ignoring spin feedback; only practicing pull-side contact.

Steps

  1. 1. In BP or soft toss intentionally aim for the middle of the field
  2. 2. Watch the spin of every batted ball
  3. 3. Stay deeper in the zone
  4. 4. Progress to live or machine work with the same intent
